‘Social’ is here a term of virtue used to disguise the fact that the networks want to monetize your interpersonal relationships and brand preferences. Facebook routinely changes its privacy options in order to expose more of users’ information to the public, which is arguably rather anti-social. The secret police of East Germany and Cambodia were very interested in finding out about people’s ‘social networks’.
