Parental alienation syndrome

Sometimes a child becomes emotionally estranged from one parent, with the encouragement of the other parent. Since the 1980s, some have suggested this is a psychiatric disorder, called ‘parental alienation syndrome’, a label that tends to pathologize unhappy families. The actor Alec Baldwin claimed it applied to his relationship with his and Kim Basinger’s daughter.
